Weekend in Santo Domingo
Weekend in Santo Domingo = Major Yes
Hey hey! Santo Domingo is giving major Caribbean gem energy. I hopped over to our island neighbor for the weekend and let me tell you—Zona Colonial is a dream. Think colorful Spanish architecture, cobblestone streets, and the kind of charm that makes you want to linger over a café con leche just a little longer.

TRAVEL
This past weekend we packed our bags (and Fred’s show lead) and headed to Santo Domingo for his dog show debut there. The star of the trip? Fred, obviously. But a very close second? Our stay at the Kimpton Las Mercedes in the heart of Zona Colonial.
The Hotel: Kimpton Las Mercedes
From the moment we arrived, I was in love—the architecture, the interiors, the vibe—it’s that perfect mix of historic charm and modern design. The service was flawless, the energy was relaxed but refined, and the staff made us feel instantly at home. And Fred? He was treated like the king he knows he is. Everyone knew his name by the end of the first day.
Zola: Culinary Heaven
We didn’t have to wander far for an incredible meal—Zola, the hotel’s restaurant, completely stole the show. Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated—exactly what you want after a long day in the ring.
Dog Show Life
Most of the weekend was all about Fred—grooming, showing, and soaking in the experience. We didn’t venture much outside the hotel, but honestly? Between the comfort, the food, and the people-watching in the lobby, I wasn’t mad about it. And let’s talk about the 24/7 room service—coming back late from the dog show and still being able to order a full, delicious meal was a 10 out of 10.
The Perfect Last Day
On our final day, we finally made it to the rooftop pool—and it was a vibe. Sunny skies, stunning views over Zona Colonial, and a live DJ spinning music that made it feel like the perfect Sunday party. We soaked it all in, then capped off the trip with dinner at Casa Luca—delicious food, warm ambiance, and the perfect ending to a fabulous weekend. Already planning our return. Kimpton Las Mercedes, you have my heart (and Fred’s paw print approval).
Cheers, Frances @GalOffDuty
